This website gives you the materials & instructions for adding the simple, 4-step, scientific-thinking Improvement Kata pattern to your classroom or team activities.

All it takes to get started is some easy-to-run, fun, 50-minute, hands-on exercises.

The value of hands-on classroom activities depends on what students are practicing

when they engage in them. Adding the simple, 4-step Improvement Kata framework

turns your activities into practice in the metacognitive skill of scientific thinking.

The Improvement Kata is a scientific working pattern practiced in many business organizations. Kata in the Classroom (KiC) helps you introduce it and practice the following life skills for achieving challenging goals along uncharted paths:

A definition of Scientific Thinking

It's a way of approaching goals & problems:

1.   Acknowledging that our comprehension is always incomplete and

      possibly wrong.

2.   Assuming that answers will be found by test rather than just deliberation.

(You make predictions and test them with experiments.)

3.   Appreciating that differences between a prediction and what actually

happens can be a useful source of learning and adjustment.

  • Scientific/Creative Thinking. Generate & refine solutions to obstacles through experimentation.

  • Collaboration. Work in a team to accomplish a next goal on the way to a larger challenge.

  • Communication. Organize thoughts, data and findings, and share them effectively.

NO NEW CONTENT NEEDED! Once you run the KiC-1 exercise to introduce the Improvement Kata pattern, you can apply its 4-step framework to nearly any content or activity you're already using. Then the content or activity also becomes practice in scientific thinking. See the "Applications" page for examples.

Students may be unaware of the importance of metacognition, unless it is explicitly emphasized by their teachers. With the 4-step Improvement Kata pattern, educators

are integrating practice of metacognitive skill across subjects and age levels.
