This website gives you the materials & instructions for introducing the simple,

practical, scientific-thinking Improvement Kata pattern to your classroom or team,

through two easy-to-run, fun, 50-minute, hands-on exercises.

The 4-step Improvement Kata pattern fits with the content

you're already using in your classroom. Once you run the

KiC-1 exercise, which introduces the Improvement Kata

pattern, you can apply that 4-step framework to nearly

any content and activity. This way the content or activity

also becomes practice in meta-cognitive skills.

The Improvement Kata is a scientific working pattern practiced in many business organizations. Kata in the Classroom (KiC) helps you introduce it and convey these

universal life skills for achieving challenging goals along uncharted paths:

  • Scientific/Creative Thinking. Generate & refine solutions to obstacles through experimentation.

  • Collaboration. Work in a team to accomplish a next goal on the way to a larger challenge.

  • Communication. Organize thoughts, data and findings, and share them effectively.
